Steve Fowkes
I guess I get any musical talent is inherited from my family. My dad played trumpet in the Heage and Rolls Royce brass bands and my grandfather was a band leader. After my mum thought I was strangling the cat with the violin I decided to take up the guitar and played in many school concerts. I’ve also been known to busk in Nottingham (although you’ll be glad to know that was quite a while ago now). It wasn’t until I was in my late twenties, after a lacklustre cycle racing career, that I decided to audition for a local musical society, and the rest as they say is history. |
personaldetails
| Born in: |
Holbrook maternity home near Belper (which ironically is now a nursing home for the elderly) |
| Grew up in: |
Belper (and Skegness/Scarborough during holidays), so I guess that explains a lot ! The mediaeval name for Belper was ‘Beaurepaire’ which means ‘beautiful place’ |
| Star sign: |
|
| Hobbies: |
Singing (obviously), a keen cyclist, playing the guitar, table tennis - have been playing in local leagues for over 30 years and I’m afraid it’s starting to show in my play! |
| Favourite Music: |
Everything from Rachmaninov to Led Zeppelin, although I have to say my favourite singer is Matt Monro |
| Most wanted to play: |
I got to play Tommy Albright in EMS’s recent production of Brigadoon, so I guess I’ve done it, although John Valjean (Les Miserables) would be good (but highly unlikely though) |
| First job: |
Sunday morning paper round earning the princely sum of 70 pence |
| First ever record: |
See My Baby Jive (by Wizzard). Coincidentally Wizzard’s lead singer, Roy Wood, lives just outside Derby |
| Favourite film: |
No one real favourite but "Zulu", "The Hill" (starring Sean Connery before he did James Bond) and "Some Like it Hot" are films I could watch over and over |
| Interesting story: |
They say everyone has their 15 mins of fame and mine was back in 1980 when I and three mates were filmed cycle touring round Scotland by the BBC. It’s a classic piece that, like me, hasn’t really stood the test of time |
