synopsis

Our story is set in the South Pacific Islands during the Second World War, where we meet a French Planter, Emile de Becque, who is showing Nellie Forbush, an American nurse, around his home.

Elsewhere on the island a group of Seabees and Marines are joined by Bloody Mary selling her wares on the beach. The enterprising Luther Billis arrives, keen to do a deal with Mary. He is soon out manoeuvred in to parting with his goods and cash in exchange for a Boar’s Tooth Bracelet from the mysterious island of Bali Ha’i.

Mary begins to stimulate the guys’ interest in Bali Ha’i in the hope that she can engineer a meeting with her daughter Liat and Lt. Cable, whom she regards as an ideal husband. Cable is unaware of her plan, but is never-the-less drawn to the island along with Billis, who is keen to see the Boar’s Tooth Ceremony.

Capt. Bracket, Commander of the island, asks Emile to accompany Lt. Cable on a special mission. Emile at first refuses, giving Cable the chance to visit Bali Ha’i. On the island Liat and Cable fall in love. Meanwhile Nellie refuses Emile’s proposal of marriage when she learns that he is the father of two Eurasian children. Rejected, Emile agrees to accompany Lt. Cable on his risky venture.

On hearing of the mission Nellie goes in search of Emile. She hears a radio broadcast where Emile reports that Cable had been killed, but the broadcast is cut short as Japanese aircraft attack the island.

Mary and Liat come looking for Cable, and Nellie breaks the terrible news to them. Nellie realizes the mistake of her prejudice and goes to Emile’s home to look after his children, not knowing if she will ever see him again...
