Why Musical Society Reviews Matter

Musical society reviews provide a glimpse into the heart of our organisation. They showcase the welcoming atmosphere, the sense of belonging, and the incredible talent that defines Erewash Musical Society. These testimonials are not just about us; they’re about the transformative power of community theatre and the connections it fosters.

Erewash Musical Society is proud to have received many exceptional reviews from the theatre community. Here are just a few of many:

Sunset Boulevard

The sweeping and lush orchestrations under musical director James Bowden are brilliantly played and add enormously to create the right atmospheres to this amateur show and carry the awkward and menacing drama of writer Joe Gillis (Phil Deakin) and former Hollywood silent pictures star Norma Desmond (Alex Tavener) – twenty plus years his senior – to its dangerously deluded and mad-eyed end. Both Deakin and Tavener are superb in their very professional performances and from Deakin’s first sung prologue and Tavener’s grand melancholic entrance in scene four (Surrender/With One Look/Salome) we are entranced and realise we are in very good theatrical hands as audience members.

AIDA

I applaud the fact that Erewash have gone for a musical that is not performed often, well I’ve never seen it advertised or performed around the area before, and that it is a modern piece of theatre. Local theatre sometimes play it safe, because they have to in order to get bums on seats which pays for the theatre group to survive, so it’s nice to see a production that is new to the local stage, not only to me but I’m sure to a lot of local theatre fans.

Hot Mikado

This was my first time watching the Hot Mikado, although I was aware of the different version of this traditional Gilbert and Sullivan classic. I was really interested to see how Erewash would put their mark on the performance and make it their own and I wasn’t disappointed.

Godspell

There were many highlights for me in this show. I loved hearing "Day By Day" sung with such clarity, going into a wonderful choral section. "Prepare Ye" was brilliantly rousing. "All For The Best", which is a duet between Adam and Martin was excellent on every level as it also incorporated mini versions of the pair singing and dancing, thanks to some nifty puppetry work by the pair. "Save The People" allowed us to hear Adam's voice with just a guitar accompaniment to start with. Adam also excelled with the gorgeous "Beautiful City", one of the finest and possibly most under-rated songs from this musical. I adored the duet of "By My Side" which was delivered with such purity and the two voices so well in tune with the other. And who could not love "Turn Back O Man" delivered in that sultry cabaret style?
