Evita

Evita poster

Evita is based on the historical story of María Eva Duarte de Perón, a poor Argentinian girl who grows up to be the wife of the president of Argentina, worshipped by her people. As a young woman who longs for an acting career, fame, and fortune, Eva quickly learns that her feminine wiles hold power among a culture, and a political system, run by men. Once she makes it to Buenos Aires, Evita finds fame and power in her powers of seduction, eventually seducing the rising political figure, Juan Perón, who becomes the President of Argentina. As First Lady of Argentina, she aligns herself with the poor, winning herself, and Perón, popularity among Argentinians. Evita becomes a hero to the poor and the working class—and an enemy to the rich. A young and unknown revolutionary, Ché, narrates the rise and fall of the beloved matriarch of the Argentinian people. This blockbuster musical, made even more famous as a 1996 Hollywood film starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas, shows both the righteous determination, and the ruthless power, of Argentina’s 20th century matriarch.

Kim Sparks

Director – Kim Sparks

I am excited to direct Evita as I have long been fascinated by the story of Eva Perón and am a big fan of Tim Rice. The show’s exploration of leadership, class struggle, and the complexity of human nature offers a compelling narrative that challenges audiences to reflect on the impact of personal drive on the greater society. Historical musicals present a unique challenge in being both entertaining and sympathetic, as they portray real people and events, requiring careful balance between artistic expression and respect for the truth.

I’m incredibly excited to be co-directing Evita for Erewash Musical Society, a musical that has been close to my heart since childhood. Growing up with this iconic show, Evita was one of the first musicals that sparked my passion for theatre. “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” was even one of the first songs I ever performed in competition, making this production feel especially personal and meaningful. The chance to bring this powerful story to life, alongside Kim and a talented cast, is a dream come true. I can’t wait to share this unforgettable musical with our audiences and celebrate the magic of theatre together.

James Bowden

Musical Director – James Bowden

Evita is one of my favourite musicals, partially because it is based on a real person and real events, and partially because contains one of the best loved songs in musical theatre! The music tells the story perfectly and I think it is probably one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s best examples of this.

Choreographer – Laurie Trott

Laurie recently played the shoplifting terror Noreen in Bad Girls the Musical, and is also very familiar with the production roles, having choreographed many shows in the past.

Laurie also works hard on our committee as our production secretary, making sure we have everything we need to put on fantastic shows!
